The wave of “cryptocurrency payments” hits cross-border e-commerce: Shopify x USDC is on the move!
"When the time comes when foreign exchange fees disappear..."
That fantasy has finally become a reality.
This week, Shopify officially announced the global launch of USDC (USD Coin) payments .
Moreover, by utilizing Ethereum L2 “Base”, we provide a fast, low-cost payment route.
Today, I will give you a quick overview of why this news will be a turning point for cross-border e-commerce.
What is USDC? A “price-stable” digital token
- Its value is pegged 1:1 to the US dollar
- Designed for “payments and remittances”
- Gas fees (commissions) are significantly reduced via Layer 2 "Base"
The key point is that it is a virtual currency whose price does not fluctuate.
Since it can be treated like legal tender, it has high compatibility with EC.
Why did Shopify adopt USDC?
This announcement does not end with simply "expanding payment methods."
In fact, behind this lies a hidden intention to fundamentally reconsider "that issue" that is common in cross-border e-commerce.
- Why now?
- Why a network called Base?
- Why USDC?
What these questions have in common is a certain next-generation feel.
While at first glance it may seem like a technical topic, it is also tied to Shopify's strategy itself .

Benefits of implementation? Just a sneak peek
Of course, there are also numerical benefits to be gained from implementing it.
However, this is not something that will "change right now," but rather something that "will make a difference if you know now."
- Cost optimization of "that" that can be expected at a practical level
- An unexpected path to a certain customer base in a certain area
- Furthermore, is some sort of incentive design going on behind the scenes...?
*Of course, the "inside story" here cannot be revealed to the general public...!
The "high resolution parts" are explained in detail in a video exclusive to TJC Strategy Lab members .
